Celebrating 20 Years of Service at UAL

Lesley Wilkins has been a key part of the team at LCC for 20 years and we caught up with her to chat about the highlights from her career, the changes she’s observed, and what makes her job so rewarding!

Can you tell me a bit about your current role, and any other roles you’ve worked in at UAL over the last 20 years?

Since I began working at UAL, I’ve only ever worked at LCC, and I’m currently the Senior Resourcing Advisor, handling recruitment, including for associate lecturers. I’ve held several positions during my time here. I initially started on a one-year contract that was extended for four years. That was for a project called “Own It,” which helped students protect their intellectual property while they were studying at UAL. The project ended, and I moved into a role as a Staffing Advisor, and I’ve been working in resourcing ever since. I’ve progressed from Staffing Advisor to Resourcing Advisor, and now to Senior Resourcing Advisor. I’ve been in resourcing for just over 12 years now

What do you most enjoy about your role?

I love guiding someone through the recruitment process, from applying to finalising their right-to-work checks. It’s not just about processing an application—it’s about helping a real person, whether they’re just starting their career or looking for their next step. It’s a great feeling to see them go through the interview process and then help them settle in smoothly at the college.

Each recruitment campaign is different, and you meet so many different characters. I enjoy being organised and assisting others. It’s about supporting people so they can focus on their work while we ensure everything runs smoothly in the background.

How would you describe the changes you’ve seen at UAL over the years?

I know some people view change negatively, but it’s really just a natural progression. You have to embrace it. Maybe 20 years ago, communication about change wasn’t as transparent as it is now, so it often felt like change for the sake of change. Today, we’re more involved, and we have a better sense of where the Colleges and University are heading.

Sometimes, change can be difficult at first—you wonder why it’s happening—but once you get comfortable with new systems and see the benefits, it gets easier. One of the biggest changes I’ve noticed is the increased interaction between management and staff. There’s more involvement, with staff talks, conferences, and a focus on well-being. Staff development has really improved, and I love how much emphasis is placed on well-being. At LCC, development goes beyond teaching and administrative tasks—one of the most fun things I’ve done is learning to play steel drums, which has been an amazing experience.

Is there anyone who has impacted your career at UAL?

There are so many people who have helped me throughout the years! I’ve had many wonderful colleagues who’ve made a big difference.

Is there a project or initiative you’re particularly proud of contributing to?

Recruitment itself is an initiative because we’re constantly trying to diversify our workforce. I’m proud to be part of a team that’s focused on embracing change and moving recruitment forward to attract a more diverse and inclusive workforce.

What advice would you give to someone early in their career at UAL?

Take advantage of all the opportunities available—especially staff development and well-being initiatives. Also, don’t opt out of the pension scheme; it’s such a good one, and I’ve seen too many people, especially when they’re starting, consider opting out. Get involved in the social side of work—attend the Christmas and summer parties and interact with colleagues from different departments. After 20 years, I still have colleagues I can turn to for advice or guidance. Be active in connecting with others.
