The opportunity
The Junior Web Developer role supports the Development Team in building and enhancing the University’s core public platforms. As part of the Digital Public Platforms Team, you will work in sprints alongside Content and UX teams on improving UAL’s digital public platforms. You will be building and maintaining templates and new functionality through our content management systems and helping to develop new components and our pattern library. The role may also be involved in a number of projects.
You will work with both front and back-end programming languages across the various products the team manages. This includes (but is not limited to) the corporate website, Portfolio and Graduate Showcase sites, the student app, online forms solution and several WordPress sites.
Working with a small team of developers, you will have opportunities to contribute your own ideas and take ownership of projects whilst exploring new technologies and gaining knowledge from seasoned team members.
About you
You will work with both front and back end programming languages across the various products the team manages. This includes (but is not limited to) the corporate website, Portfolio and Graduate Showcase sites, the student app, online forms solution and several WordPress sites.
Working with a small team of developers, you will have opportunities to contribute your own ideas and take ownership of projects whilst exploring new technologies and gaining knowledge from seasoned team members.
You will have experience of building websites using HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript with an understanding and appreciation of coding best practices and accessibility standards.
You will have knowledge of PHP7+ and MySQL as well as familiarity of developing within a content management system, particularly WordPress.
Knowledge of a front end JavaScript framework (React, Lit, etc) is desirable but not essential.
We welcome applications from developers with prior industry experience but also those who have relevant educational qualifications or have recently completed a coding bootcamp. Applicants with a strong portfolio of personal or open-source projects are also invited to apply.
An understanding of source control and workflow using Git, NPM, Webpack is essential, along with a demonstrable knowledge of web and accessibility standards.
Essential skills include:
- Understanding of HTML, CSS and JavaScript
- Knowledge of PHP7+ and MySQL
- Knowledge of content management systems, particularly WordPress
- Understanding of JavaScript libraries and front-end frameworks (React, Lit, Bootstrap etc.)
- Understanding of source control and workflow using Git, NPM, Webpack
- Demonstrable knowledge of web and accessibility standards
