Useful information to guide you through the recruitment process
Recruitment process
Our recruitment process can vary from role to role based on the nature of the role, level, responsibilities, job family and other factors. Our selection process typically takes 6 weeks after a role has closed. Generally, our recruitment process has 5 stages: Application, Shortlisting, Interview, Offer, Onboarding.
However, sometimes the ‘Interview’ step might include a few extra stages including a Psychometric Assessment, Presentation/Micro-Teach Session, Stakeholder Interview, Panel Interview. For example, for a Professor role, you may need to undertake psychometric tests in addition to presenting on a certain topic to Deans and other senior academics as part of a Stakeholder panel interview.
Once a role is closed, the local Resourcing Team managing the vacancy will notify a selection panel to begin shortlisting. Once applications have been assessed, candidates are notified by email and either invited to the next stage of the process or notified of being unsuccessful. We usually aim to send out a notification with 10-15 days after a role has closed but this may take longer if a high volume of applications has been received.
Application process
To be considered for any of our vacancies, you will need to follow the application process as detailed in the post you want to be considered for. For many of our roles, you will need to apply directly through our job board.
We are unable to accept emailed applications or speculative CVs. If you have not applied or signed up for job alerts with us before, you will need to create an account. Registration does not take long and will help you to keep track of your application. You can save your application and come back to it later provided the role has not closed.
We advise you to apply early as the application closing date may be brought forward if we receive enough applications. Any changes to the closing date will be communicated with at least 24 hours notice (we usually aim to provide 48 hours notice). We are unable to accept late applications unless there was a technical issue reported prior to the closing date.
If you have any general questions or require any reasonable adjustments, there should be contact details on the advert. If there are none listed, please refer to details on our Contact us page, making sure to quote the vacancy ID, job title and your application ID (if possible).
Assessment/Interview process
Congratulations if you have been invited to attend an assessment/interview! This means that we would like to meet with you to learn more about you and your suitability for the role you have applied for.
At UAL, we use competency-based interviews to help us assess your suitability for a role. If you have not had much work experience, it is fine to use a relevant example from your studies or social situations. Questions might take the form of “tell me about a time when you….” or “describe a situation when….”.
Whilst the panel will be assessing your fit for the role, an interview is also an opportunity for you to consider if the role is a good fit for you, so feel free to ask any questions you may have at the end of your interview. We wish you the best of luck for your interview. Please do not hesitate to Contact us if you have any questions or concerns.
Eligibility to work
All job offers are conditional based on you providing proof of your eligibility to work in the UK. Some roles will also require a DBS check (basic or Enhanced) to be carried out as part of safeguarding measures. Please check the job advert and job description for further information.
If you don’t currently have the right to work and live in the UK, we might be able to offer sponsorship under the Skilled Work Visa route, subject to UK Border Agency (UKBA) requirements. There are restrictions on what occupations we do sponsor (e.g. only hard to recruit positions such as specialist Academic and Research roles or roles where there’s a skills shortage) in addition to minimum salary requirements (usually at least £38,700 per annum). Further information is available on the Home Office website.
However, with apprenticeships, there are additional eligibility requirements – you must already have the right to work in the UK and have ordinarily been resident in the UK for the last 3 years. Due to apprenticeship funding rules, sponsorship is not available for apprenticeship opportunities. If you require specific advice about your eligibility for any apprenticeship opportunities, please get in touch by email via apprenticeships@arts.ac.uk.
