People at Pride in London

Join a dynamic team making a difference

Welcome from Leonie Saywell, Associate HR Director of Culture Hub

Hello there,

I’m Leonie, and I lead the Culture Hub, a dynamic team within our People Group at the University of the Arts London (UAL). We have several exciting opportunities in our department that I would love to share with you. Having joined UAL at the end of last summer, I understand that deciding to change jobs and organisations is a significant decision, and it’s important to learn more about our culture and values.

The Culture Hub is central to our mission of enhancing and supporting our culture and values. Our team of over twenty dedicated individuals works on initiatives that make life better at UAL. In my short time here, we have achieved several milestones. We’ve conducted a review of our successful hybrid working implementation, managed our staff survey, and launched The Art of Management programme. Additionally, we’ve collaborated with our Staff Network Groups to improve policies and approaches, from workplace adjustments to raising trans awareness. We’ve also refreshed our support for our internal coaching network, developed a new approach to appraisals, and won an award for our sector-leading equal parental leave policy.

Our mission is to create a diverse, inclusive, and dynamic workplace where everyone can thrive. Discover how we’re making UAL a fantastic place to work and grow.

Our focus areas

The Culture Hub is dedicated to achieving the Race Equality Charter and implementing the Anti-Racism Strategy. We are committed to ensuring that at least 30% of our staff are from Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (B.A.M.E.) backgrounds. Moreover, we strive to create an inclusive environment that welcomes LGBTQ+ and disabled staff, fostering a workplace where everyone feels valued and supported.

Improving workplace wellbeing and enhancing staff benefits are core to our mission. We provide comprehensive support for disabled and neurodiverse colleagues and offer internal coaching to aid personal and professional growth. Our commitment extends to refreshing support for workplace adjustments and promoting trans awareness policies, ensuring all staff have the resources they need to succeed.

We are launching new leadership programs aimed at high-potential staff, alongside developing apprenticeships and enhancing strategic workforce planning. Our Art of Management programme is designed to cultivate leadership skills, preparing our staff to lead with creativity and confidence.

Recognising the need for flexibility in the modern workplace, the Culture Hub has successfully implemented hybrid working arrangements. We have also developed new approaches to appraisals, making the process more effective and beneficial for our staff.

Our efforts have been recognised with awards, particularly for our equal parental leave policy. We aim to continue setting sector-leading standards in all our initiatives, ensuring our policies and practices reflect our commitment to excellence and equality.

Addressing the climate crisis is a priority for us. Through our Climate Action Plan, we are integrating sustainability into our operations, demonstrating our dedication to environmental responsibility and sustainability.

At UAL’s Culture Hub, we value teamwork, creativity, and diversity. We celebrate various cultural events and organise team activities to foster a positive and inclusive work environment. Our commitment to an inclusive culture enhances our work and strengthens our community.

Motivated by UAL’s central vision, “the world needs creativity,” we focus on delivering social purpose and aligning our People Strategy with this vision. Our initiatives reflect our dedication to making a positive impact and driving change within and beyond our community.
