The opportunity

We are excited to announce a great opportunity to join our technical team at Wimbledon College of Arts (WCA), UAL and make a valuable contribution to our exceptional teaching and learning facilities.

Following a multimillion-pound investment programme, WCA is now progressing with its ambition to become a world leading centre for performance. With performance as its primary focus, the school provides a rich, visionary and state-of-the-art environment where performers, designers and creative technologists can collaborate and explore performance in all its guises, whilst bringing to life extraordinary work.

To contribute towards raising our global profile as a ‘Centre for Performance’ and to fully activate our new performance spaces, we are expanding our technical department. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to be building a team of live performance technicians that can bring to Wimbledon advanced knowledge and extensive professional experience, whilst equipped with enthusiastic, reassuring and inclusive soft skills indispensable to support our students’ journey.

The live performance technical team at WCA supports all the live performance spaces, which include our thoroughly equipped theatre alongside several technically enhanced studios, hosting numerous live performance productions throughout the year. Supporting students from their first ideas through to the final output on stage, the live performance technicians are an integral part of the realisation of students’ work: their knowledge and experience of industry not only enables students to realise their most professional standard of work here at WCA, but it also prepares them for a smooth transition into their working life.

About you

We are seeking a versatile and experienced stage construction and rigging specialist with a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in technical theatre or relevant subject area and/or significant experience in a similar technical role, either in industry or education or ideally both.

It is desirable for you to have relevant experience in delivering technical workshops encompassing the journey of a scenic element from initial ideal through to stage realisation. Proficiency in rigging and flying scenic elements as well as construction techniques is crucial. A working knowledge of other areas of technical theatre, such as lighting, sound, AV and stage management is highly desirable. You should possess excellent creative abilities in interpreting students’ ideas and suggesting solutions for their realisation as well as demonstrating competence in concept development for scenic design and have a good understanding of production processes.

Additionally, you should possess effective and adaptable communication skills, a good working knowledge of IT packages and the ability to manage technical resources efficiently.

Your professional competence, guidance, and advice will play an instrumental role in supporting students with their live performance projects. It will be vital for you to remain updated about stage construction and rigging techniques as well as technical theatre processes and digital technology, whilst introducing innovative ideas and workshops to enrich the overall student journey. Furthermore, you will be responsible for offering solutions toward promoting a sustainable stage craft practice focusing on re-using, re-purposing and re-cycling materials as well as effectively managing and organizing our stock of scenic and rigging elements.

By bringing your technical expertise, passion for teaching and learning and collaborative mindset to the role, you will contribute to creating a safe, accessible and enriching environment for students at WCA, ensuring their journey with us is second to none.

Interviews are scheduled to take place between 1st and 5th August 2023.

Should you have any questions about the application process or require reasonable adjustments for your application, please contact Aruna Dhinakaran, Resourcing Assistant at jobs.ccw@arts.ac.uk.
