The opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in UAL’s commitment to providing excellent outcomes and experience for all doctoral students.  As Director of Doctoral Training and Development, you will provide the leadership and management of the University’s doctoral training and development programme RNUAL (Research Networks UAL) including design, development and delivery of the programme. The RNUAL training programme is a cross- university programme of training and development delivered through the UAL

Doctoral School, under the strategic leadership of the Dean of the Doctoral School.

Based at our High Holborn site, the Doctoral School provides focus, advocacy and a dedicated space for cross-university Post Graduate Research activities. As Director of doctoral training and development, you will be responsible for developing and delivering a cross- university programme of co-ordinated doctoral student training and development in alignment with the University’s commitment to the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers. As an Art and Design specialist institution the training and development programme should recognise the needs of students engaging in research in all its forms, including practice research.

You will also support the development of the University’s research culture for PGR students through contributing to the development of a cross-university programme of events and activities hosted by the Doctoral School.  You will support the Dean of the Doctoral School in delivering key aspects of the new research strategy and in meeting our strategic ambitions to grow PhD student numbers while improving student outcomes and the research student experience.

About you

You will hold a PhD in a relevant disciplinary field or equivalent research experience. You should have experience of supervising PhD students and of researcher development frameworks. Experience of developing or leading PGR development programmes and a teaching qualification, such as a PGCert, are desirable.

You will have an understanding of the contextual issues affecting PGR development and training in the UK and be able to engage with relevant pedagogical research to develop the programme. You will be familiar with debates and research relating to decolonising the curriculum and awarding gaps within the HE Sector.

Closing Date: Tuesday 4th July 2023

Provisional Interview Date: Wednesday 19th July 2023
