The opportunity

The Graphic Communication Design programme at Central Saint Martins is interested in receiving applications for Associate Lecturers (AL) and Visiting Practitioners (VP) with the potential to teach into various areas across the programme’s three courses: BA Graphic Communication Design, MA Graphic Communication Design, and MA Communicating Complexity.

We are interested in hearing from a range of applicants with a demonstrated commitment to all aspects of graphic communication design practice and/or higher education in graphic communication design at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Shortlisted applicants will be interviewed and, if identified as appointable, added to a pool of Associate Lecturers and Visiting Practitioners who can be matched to staffing needs that arise over a 12-month period. This could include tutoring, delivering seminar and workshop activities, or developing course materials.

While most needs that arise in-year are temporary, staff who take on hourly-paid roles often find them to be a productive way to become immersed in our environment, develop their practice as academics, and gain experience that may help them in later applications to more substantive or permanent roles within our programme.

Please note that we expect to receive a high volume of applications from appointable candidates, and while we hope to engage as many of them as possible, being added to the pool of Associate Lecturers and Visiting Practitioners does not guarantee an offer of work.

Successful candidates will be expected to:

  • Take a student-centred approach to providing learning and teaching in graphic communication design
  • Work as part of a team to deliver academic units that include staff-led as well as student-initiated project briefs
  • Provide considered feedback on student work and conduct assessment (both formative and summative) which is rigorous, fair, clear and complies with the policies established by the University and the College
  • Work in-person or digitally as required
  • Participate in narrowing student achievement gaps and reflect on your own practice through the lenses of ethics, anti-racism, climate emergency and social justice more broadly

About you

This role is open to candidates who have a BA or MA in Graphic Communication Design, or the equivalent, and some prior experience and awareness of teaching at undergraduate or postgraduate level. This could include delivery of workshops or guest lectures and/or experience as a Graduate Teaching Assistant, for example.

How to apply:
Interested candidates should provide a CV and a cover letter (both in PDF format) as well as a portfolio (PDF or links) by clicking ‘Apply’ below.

Your CV should list your recent educational and professional experience (including dates, roles and institutions/ organisations).

In your cover letter, please provide a paragraph or two explaining why you are interested in the role and how it relates to your skills, experience, and interests. Before writing the cover letter, we recommend that you spend a few minutes finding out more about our courses and student community:

BA Graphic Communication Design
MA Graphic Communication Design
MA Communicating Complexity

Please also provide an additional PDF or links to examples of your work that might help us match you to specific parts of the course (a general portfolio is fine).

An online Q&A session will take place on Monday 12 June at 16:00 – 17:00. Please click on this following link if you are interested in joining the session Click here to join the meeting

The application period for this role will close at 23:59 on Monday 19 June 2023.

Interviews will be held online and are provisionally scheduled to take place between July 3–7, 2023.
