The opportunity

About the course and programme

MA Graphic Communication Design explores how the production of knowledge is intertwined with its form, context, and circulation. The course takes an expanded approach to the idea of research, combining studio and writing practice to engage critically with graphic design as both a creative practice and a subject of study. Through iterative and open-ended experimentation with visual media and tools of communication, students develop work that investigates existing knowledge, activates positions, and projects new forms of knowledge—within and beyond the discipline.

Engaging with studio and writing practice as a form of rigorous enquiry, students and staff together explore how graphic design is a situated and relational discipline that both reflects and reconfigures its cultural, social, and environmental conditions. From this position, our community of practitioners critically interrogates the academic and professional contexts for practice as well as the very nature of the discipline itself, continually co-defining and re-defining the expanding field of graphic design.

MA Graphic Communication Design is part of the Graphic Communication Design Programme, which also includes BA (Hons) Graphic Communication Design and MA Communicating Complexity. Our approach to subject spans an expanding assemblage of media and agendas. We encourage a wide range of practices and concerns, which are united by a shared appreciation for the ways that thinking and making advance one another. Our programme facilitates a broad and dynamic community of students and staff to thrive through graphic and communication design in diverse and meaningful ways. Our goal as a programme is to ask and answer questions through and about graphic communication design.

Your profile

About the role

MA Graphic Communication Design is recruiting a Lecturer to work in collaboration with the rest of the staff team to develop and deliver curriculum across both years of the course. The Lecturer will be expected to:

  • support students in the development of independent, open-ended, and rigorous research-led graphic design practices;
  • support the development of critical and mature engagement in graphic design practice through attention to form and production;
  • help students contextualise their practice within graphic design and in relation to broader discourses;
  • broaden the range of perspectives represented within the course through development of reading lists, course events, and other curricular initiatives; and
  • provide professional development and pastoral support to students.

Many of these goals will be supported through a range of strategic course projects, such as a seminar/workshop series or curricular development project. The Lecturer will be asked to manage the resources, materials, and cooperative relationships relevant to these projects, either in collaboration with, or as delegated by, the Course Leader. The Lecturer will also act as a tutorial group leader for the course (alongside Associate Lecturers). Each tutor takes primary responsibility for a small group of students, leading weekly tutorial sessions and guiding students’ development through the course curriculum.

The responsibilities associated with this role will also respond to academic and structural changes that are expected to come in line with UAL’s review of postgraduate teaching frameworks.

This role offers the potential for meaningful development across many areas of academic practice.

A PhD is not required for this role, but we will consider it as additional evidence of rigorous and critical engagement with the field—as we will other relevant academic and professional experience.

Additional opportunities

We are interested in hearing from a range of applicants with a demonstrated commitment to all aspects of graphic communication design practice and/or higher education in graphic communication design. Shortlisted candidates who are not offered this Lecturer role but are considered appointable will be invited to be added to a pool of Associate Lecturers within the Graphic Communication Design Programme. Candidates added to this pool can then be matched to hourly-paid staffing needs that arise over a 12-month period across all courses in the programme (including undergraduate and postgraduate).
