The opportunity

The Product, Ceramic and Industrial Design programme at Central Saint Martins invites applications for Associate Lecturers (ALs) to teach on our new course, MA Design for Industry 5.0.

We welcome applications from practitioners and educators from the fields of Industrial Design, Engineering, Applied Sciences, Manufacturing, socially driven entrepreneurship, the Circular Economy, Service Design and/or Matters of Care, with a demonstrable commitment to the principles of Industry 5.0.

Knowledge and experience in industrial design, hybrid manufacturing, and a strong interest in design education are highly desirable. We are particularly interested in hearing from candidates with expertise in the following areas:

  • Industrial design and manufacturing-oriented social entrepreneurship
  • Social anthropology in relation to industrial design and manufacturing
  • Software, hardware, IoT and robotics in design and manufacturing
  • Applied sciences in cyber-physical technologies
  • User-centred design, circular economy, and planetary concerns

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to interview and, if deemed appointable, will be added to a pool of Associate Lecturers and Visiting Practitioners. They may be matched to staffing needs that arise over a 12-month period, which could include tutoring, delivering seminars and workshops, or developing course materials and project briefs.

While most needs are temporary in nature, many staff find these hourly-paid roles to be a valuable way to become immersed in our academic environment, develop their teaching practice, and gain experience that may support future applications for more substantive or permanent roles within the programme.

Your profile

Successful candidates will be expected to:

  • Take a student-centred approach to learning and teaching on the MA Design for Industry 5.0
  • Work collaboratively to deliver academic units, including both staff-led and student-initiated project briefs, which may involve partnerships with industry
  • Provide constructive and considered feedback on student work and conduct assessments that are rigorous, clear and fair, in line with University and College policies
  • Contribute to reducing student attainment gaps, and reflect on teaching practice through the lenses of ethics, anti-racism, the climate emergency and social justice
  • Foster a positive and caring team dynamic among both staff and students, with a collaborative and friendly attitude

This role is open to candidates with degree-level qualifications in Product and Industrial Design, Design engineering, or an equivalent. We also welcome applications from candidates with relevant disciplinary backgrounds, such as the Applied Sciences and Humanities, whose practice and/or teaching relates to Industry 5.0 principles and technologies.

You must be resident in the UK to be considered for Associate Lecturer vacancies.

Some prior experience and awareness of teaching at undergraduate or postgraduate level is desirable. This could include the delivery of workshops, guest lectures and/or conferences talks and keynotes. Industry experience in relevant fields is desirable.

About MA Design for Industry 5.0 (MADI 5)

At the forefront of new industry, this course centres people and planet in the future of design, technology and manufacturing. Industry 5.0 is a future in which the traditional drivers of efficiency and productivity give way to the ethics of care and human-centred design, while respecting environmental circularity and planetary production limitations. MA Design for Industry 5.0 foregrounds people and planet to explore the entrepreneurial opportunity presented by the fourth industrial revolution. The course goes beyond designing functional objects to innovating object ecosystems, exploring their entrepreneurial and regenerative potential.

If you wish to have a discussion about the specific requirements of role, please do feel free to contact Assa Ashuach, Course Leader MADI5: a.ashuach@csm.arts.ac.uk and Kim Bagley, Acting Programme Director PCID: k.bagley@csm.arts.ac.uk
