The opportunity

University of the Arts London (UAL) generates and inspires the creativity the world needs for a better future. Since 1842 our Colleges have been defining creative education. With curiosity, imagination and intent we make work which creates lasting change for people and our planet.

As part of this mission, we are seeking a motivated and talented Senior Designer to join the in-house Creative team.

This Senior Designer role is to lead the team in the design process from beginning to end, responding to a variety of briefs from across the organisation. You will be joining a group of 7 multi-disciplinary designers and Creative Producer. We are looking for a creative leader, team player, a curious and proactive problem solver, who gets as excited about the big picture as well as the small details. In turn, we offer a nurturing creative environment, a friendly team and the chance to contribute to exciting changes at UAL.

UAL Creative is University of the Arts London’s in-house design studio. Since 2019 we have been building a team including alumni, recent graduates and occasionally students. We are a group of multi-disciplinary designers, freelance and permanent, Junior to Senior typically working on: design strategy, design thinking, design systems, campaign design—including print, digital and animated assets and digital product design for teams and projects across the University.

Working to a shared communications strategy across the University, for staff, students and external audiences and reporting to the Head of Creative, this is a pivotal role which balances design, creative strategy and leading Creatives. The Creative team sits within the Communications department which is a collaborative, creative and inclusive team who understand the role of communications in championing the transformative power of creative education.

This is a hybrid role, based at our High Holborn site, but is part of the wider Communication community so will include occasional time spent at our other London sites as needed.

Your profile

As an experienced Senior Designer with in-depth experience of the creative process and leading design teams, you will be able to demonstrate:

  • Degree or professional qualification in design or relevant discipline, and extensive experience working in multi-disciplinary agile teams, in in-house, freelance or agency design roles.
  • Excellent in-depth understanding of the creative application of graphic design, typography, colour, photography and accessibility across multiple touchpoints, including multi-channel campaigns for digital and print and the application of brand guidelines.
  • Solid knowledge of design thinking and agile principles and methodologies.

As part of your application we ask you to include a curated portfolio demonstrating your fit for this role. Portfolios can be uploaded in the form as a PDF (max file size 5MB) or supplied as a link. If you supply this as a link, please add this to the 'supporting information' or 'further information' section of the application. If you have any questions or queries on this, please contact spstaffrecruitment@arts.ac.uk.

Please note that appointments are usually made at the start of the salary grade. We advertise the full salary range so that candidates are aware of the progression within the pay grade.
