The opportunity
The Courses are being developed in a partnership between UAL Online and London College of Fashion, Fashion Business School. As Course Leader, you will be responsible to the Programme Director for the academic leadership and management of the Courses.
During course design and development your role will involve academic and subject leadership while you and your staff team work in partnership with UAL Online to develop engaging and interactive online learning experiences. You will bring specialist subject knowledge and pedagogy to develop creative and critically engaged education and will work with UAL Online’s specialist team to design and build this to the agreed model and prepare for delivery.
During course delivery you will be responsible for the maintenance and enhancement of standards and have responsibility for the fully online delivery and assessment of the curriculum to a global cohort of postgraduate learners in a year-round delivery calendar.
You will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the Courses including resource management and all areas of learning, teaching and assessment of students, monitoring and improvements. This role works in close collaboration with UAL Online.
You will be required to ensure the observance and implementation of the policies and procedures of the University and the College and you will be required to work collaboratively with UAL Online, adhering to the flexible, scalable and proactively inclusive online learning principles that are part of the UAL Online course model. More widely you will be an active participant in a growing community of colleagues developing our growing online portfolio.
Key duties and responsibilities:
In consultation with academic, administrative, managerial and technical colleagues (as appropriate) and UAL Online, you will:
- Contribute to achieving the strategic ambition of the University and the College to make a UAL education available to more students than ever before by developing and delivering ambitious, pedagogically sound and subject leading education, online.
- Contribute to and deliver on the vision for the course, from course proposition and validation throughout design and development and into its delivery when you will contribute to effective monitoring of the course and lead enhancement activities including Modifications and Revalidations when required
- Design and develop a portion of the course units. This will include developing the curriculum for the unit, authoring teaching materials, creating media content, reviewing and signing off course design and planning delivery, in collaboration with UAL Online.
- Lead on the teaching delivery of the course. This will include facilitating asynchronous teaching and discussions, conducting tutorials, and weekly live sessions (times may vary according to time zones of student population), and recruiting and supporting course tutors when student numbers require this.
- Contribute to the work of the University by participating in and contributing to academic committees, staff development events, and representing the Courses at external events
- Ensure that the subject curriculum is relevant, current and consistent with the mission of the Programme and the vision for the Courses
- Bring on board and support industry partners who will contribute to teaching and learning through the development of live project briefs, attending live sessions, giving feedback to students, and offering specialist industry perspectives within the curriculum in other ways
- Work with UAL Online to ensure that the learning, teaching and assessment methods employed across the Courses are appropriate to the academic award, resources allocated and the demands of the subject and students.
- Plan and manage the assessment process for the Courses, to comply with current policy and appropriate academic standards to ensure students are given constructive and timely feedback that helps them improve.
- In liaison with college colleagues and UAL Online ensure that information provided to students enrolled on the Courses are current, accessible and consistent as well as ensure that student records are maintained which are current, accurate and constructive.
- Ensure the maintenance of standards of student discipline on the Courses as detailed within the Student Charter as well as ensure effective liaison with, and organisation of student representatives for the course.
- Contribute to course marketing and recruitment and selection processes as required by UAL Online and the School and College.
Management responsibilities
- Contribute to the leadership and management of the Courses by working with UAL Online as well as college academic, administrative, managerial and technical colleagues to ensure quality, consistency and clarity of course delivery.
- Recruit, lead, manage and support the academic staff responsible for the development and delivery of the Courses, setting, promoting and maintaining appropriate educational and professional standards of good practice in all aspects of course organisation, administration and delivery
- Collaborate with colleagues in UAL Online and across the School and College to ensure the highest possible standards of student experience in terms of:
- Course promotion (this will include contributing to and reviewing marketing material, offering open days, and supporting admissions colleagues working with applicants) recruitment activities on – and off-site)
- Student progression between units
- Student welcome, induction and return to study support
- Learning support
- Disability support (signposting to students and staff how appropriate professional support can be accessed)
- Gather and analyse data to support monitoring and produce reports and management information as required.
- Promote a culture of enterprise within the Programme and amongst the student and staff community.
- Establish and maintain appropriate dialogues and relationships with the online distance learning and subject community (academic, governmental and commercial) and its audiences, nationally and internationally, continually updating knowledge of national academic developments, subject and skills, and relevant industrial and technological developments for the benefit of the course, colleagues and students.
- Undertake research and/or professional practice to maintain your subject currency as part of own continuing professional development to ensure you maintain your position as a leader in your field, actively promoting and contributing to the professional and research profile of the Programme, as an individual and through research groups and / or consultancy projects.
- Support and contribute to the Courses, Programme, School, College, UAL Online and and University’s external profile.
- Engage with debates and research relating to decolonising the curriculum and awarding gaps within the Higher Education

Your profile
Experience, knowledge and qualifications
- Postgraduate qualification in a relevant subject
- Experience of leading teaching and assessment in a higher education environment
- Strong interest in the design and delivery of flexible online Higher Education
- (Desirable) Experience of developing and or delivering flexible online Higher Education
