The opportunity

A fantastic opportunity to join University of the Art London’s University Secretariat, supporting the effective governance of the University. This role will be managing a small team to support the wider University, and particularly senior managers, on complex regulatory issues. These will include: 

  • The Prevent Duty.
  • Freedom of Speech and External Speaker Policy. 
  • General Data Protection Rules and the Information Commissioners’ Office. 

The role will involve developing expertise and understanding of these regulatory matters to advise senior managers on compliance matters within the University. Helping ensure that good practice on these issues is embedded in the culture and processes of the University through the delivery of project plans, effective risk management and joint work with HR and a network of colleagues across the University. Ensuring training and engagement for staff and students on regulatory issues takes place so that UAL can be compliant with all aspects of the regulations. Managing the casework and recording of issues that fall under these compliance issues. Monitoring developments in the policy landscape, working with the UAL policy team and provide advice to senior managers on compliance steps or risks that emerge. Working collaboratively with other teams in the University who support governance and compliance issues and the Digital and Technology change programme.

About you

The requirements for the role include:

Essential

  • Knowledge of project management techniques, training delivery and stakeholder management.
  • Experience of giving advice to senior colleagues and peers, applying analytical skills, influencing and shaping developments within an organisation’s culture (particularly on compliance matters),
  • Communications skills including being able to adapt your style to diverse internal and external audiences including senior managers, being able to engage audiences on complex technical issues, able to make full use of corporate and/or departmental software to maximise the effectiveness of communications.
  • Leadership and Management Skills including the ability to motivate and lead teams effectively, promoting collaboration across boundaries, leading cross functions networks and promoting the work and reputation of the team internally and externally.
  • Planning and Management skills including the ability to plan, prioritise and manage complex long term projects with multiple interdependencies.
  • Builds effective teams, networks or communities of practice and fosters constructive cross team collaboration.
  • Leads the improvement of the student or customer experience and promotes an inclusive environment for students, colleagues or customers 
  • Initiates innovative solutions to problems which have a strategic impact 

Desirable

  • Significant experience in delivering in Higher Education settings.
  • Knowledge of information management and data regulations, knowledge of Prevent and Freedom of Speech issues.
  • Experience in handling sensitive case work in a Higher Education setting
  • Experience in managing change management processes, risk management processes and formal project/programme leadership
  • able to implement new digital solutions where appropriate.
