The opportunity
Critical and Theoretical Studies (CTS) occupy a central position across the Design School and underpin all UG courses with a framework of critical, contextual and theoretical thinking which supports an international and diverse body of students in becoming confident in the research, analysis, critique and presentation of complex theoretical ideas and contexts linked to their emerging design interests.
Reporting to the CTS Lead, the CTS co-ordinators are responsible for the co-ordination of CTS teaching, curriculum development, and on-going scholarship within a programme. The post-holder will work collaboratively within the CTS team and liaise with UG course leaders, deploying specialist expertise to develop pedagogy and the curriculum in innovative and critical directions, and will be expected to undertake:
– Pedagogic and curriculum development that stimulates thought and practice which challenge the canon of the Design disciplines represented in the School with the aim of promoting diversity, inclusivity and responsible design thinking.
– Develop CTS delivery to enhance the relationship between contextual research and studio practice to meet the needs and individual interests of diverse and international student groups.
– Responsibility for a group of undergraduate students’ pastoral support, progress and attendance, maintaining records and liaising with course teams and colleagues at Programme level as appropriate.
The role offers an exciting opportunity to take an active role in the development of the CTS curriculum as the Design School works to embed key principles and shared values centred on Sustainable Design Futures and Social Justice, as suggested by the Responsible Design Framework, and the opportunities presented by recent advances in Digitally Enhanced Learning models.
About you
You will be someone who can combine teaching and assessment experience at Higher Education level with knowledge and critical understanding of the social, cultural, environmental, political and economic issues that shape contemporary design practices and theoretical discourses. You will have a background in design or architectural history, material or visual culture studies, or associated fields.
You will be able to apply innovative digital approaches to teaching and learning and be able apply your own research, including pedagogic research, to the development of learning and assessment practice and innovative approaches to course development and delivery. You will have an ability to motivate a team effectively, setting clear objectives to manage performance, and to collaborate and work within teams across different professional groups.
