The opportunity

Central Saint Martins is a world-leading centre for arts and design education. Graphic Communication Design is one of CSM’s eight academic programmes and is comprised of three courses: BA (Honours) Graphic Communication Design, MA Graphic Communication Design and MA Communicating Complexity. Our mission is to facilitate a large heterogenous community of students and staff to thrive through graphic design and communication practice in diverse and meaningful ways. We ask and answer questions through and about graphic communication design.

We are currently recruiting two lecturers to take up roles from September 2024:

BA Graphic Communication and MA Graphic Communication Design are well-established and globally respected courses that have influenced and informed industry and practice across the field of graphic design in the most open sense. Our staff value pedagogic innovation, technically and contextually informed practice, and explorative approaches to the possibilities of our disciplines.

For these roles, we are particularly interested in meeting candidates who bring critical perspectives on graphic design informed by in-depth engagements with creative computing. The lecturers who take up these posts will provide high-quality curriculum, teaching, assessment, and feedback. Working as part of a course and programme team, they will liaise with technical colleagues, participate in quality and enhancement processes, recruiting of students, and contributing to our external profile.

Both lecturers will also engage with research, knowledge exchange or other scholarly projects. Development of capacity for research and knowledge exchange is a current priority for GCD, CSM and UAL. These posts have significant potential for early career academics wishing to develop their careers on these pathways. There are currently PhD funding opportunities ringfenced for University of the Arts London academic staff.

Successful candidates will be expected to work in accordance with current university academic policy and frameworks as well as contribute to the vision and strategic positioning of the programme.

About you

You will have experience with delivery and planning in an educational environment. You will have an innovative practice situated somewhere at the intersection of creative computing and graphic design. You will be committed to working as part a team to nurture vibrant, experimental, and diverse cultures of learning. You will have an inventive and flexible approach to students’ learning experience and high aspirations for their achievement, their professional futures and the programme’s development.

You will have an undergraduate qualification in graphic design or an adjacent field. If you are an applicant for the Lecturer, MA Graphic Communication Design role, you will also have a postgraduate qualification and a track record of contributions to the advancement of one or more fields of relevance to the course. Applicants who are interested in combining this role with PhD study will be prioritised.

How to apply:

Interested candidates must provide a CV (in PDF format) as well as a supporting statement of relevant practice examples (PDF or links).

Your CV should list your recent educational and professional experience (including dates, roles and institutions/ organisations). An online Q&A session will take place on 27th February 2024 from 16:00pm–17:00pm (London, UK). This will be an opportunity to get to know the programme, learn more about the roles, and ask any questions. Please click on this following link if you are interested in joining the session: Click here to join the meeting.

Candidates can email Dr Rebecca Ross (r.ross@csm.arts.ac.uk), Director of the Graphic Communication Design Programme, to arrange an informal discussion ahead of making an application. If you identify with an under-represented group, we can also provide 1:1 coaching session with a senior member of our team (not a member of the selection panel for these roles) to support your engagement with the application process.

We plan on holding interviews in person, and you will also be asked to lead a micro-teaching session with a small group of current students or recent graduates of the course. Should this be a barrier for you, get in touch when you are invited to interview and we can make alternative arrangements. Interviews and micro-teaching sessions are provisionally scheduled to take place on 10th April 2024.

If you have any queries about this role or need any reasonable adjustments for your application, please email the CSM Resourcing Team on: jobenquiries@csm.arts.ac.uk.
