The opportunity
MA Culture, Criticism and Curation is a course directed towards critical enquiry and conscious change-making in the fields of culture, curation, art, design and creative production. It equips graduates with the tools, skills, knowledge and experience to enable them to actively navigate a variety of institutional and cultural fields, contexts and applications. The course positions curation as a form of critical practice and cultural agency that contributes academic, social, economic and creative value. MA Culture Criticism and Curation addresses the present moment and pressing questions faced by cultural producers, policy makers, curators, artists and researchers, whilst also being concerned with futures, technology, climate emergency and emerging and current global conditions.
Students are encouraged to engage in physical and digital environments testing and working with emerging digital tools, communication platforms and spaces to undertake research, experiment with forms and collaborate equitably.
As MA Culture Criticism and Curation Course leader, you will provide the academic vision and leadership for the course, working closely with colleagues within the course and across the Culture and Enterprise Programme. This is a significant opportunity for the new course leader to shape the next iteration of the course through curriculum development and pedagogic approaches that anticipate and address the contexts, needs and challenges of future organisations and leadership.
As Course Leader you will lead on the delivery of academic standards. You will help maintain stimulating and nurturing learning and research environments for students and colleagues alike. You will actively link cultures and methods of research to practice, and practice to research. You will help build knowledge exchange initiative and foster industry connections while building on the international reputation of the course and enhance professional, academic and research partnerships.
About you
You bring leadership experience from higher education and are an experienced innovator and practitioner around curatorial practices. You have a critical perspective on how the curator is positioned as a figure able to act intentionally, bring in agency and make change in a variety of frameworks, within and without the world of the creative industries and the creative economy.
You have an internationally research standing, evidenced through a clear publication plan for submission to future Research Excellence Frameworks.
Through your research, you are regarded as an innovator in the area of curatorial practice, with a critical perspective on how organisations are shaped by society and vice versa. With strong communication skills you are an advocate for change and impact within the field of curation.
You will have experience of teaching, be active in practice, research and/or scholarly activity and aware of the broad academic and professional contexts relating to the course. You will be able to demonstrate engagement with current challenges, issues and debates regarding racial justice climate emergency and emerging and current global conditions.
With strong communication skills you are an advocate for change in the paradigms and practices of curatorial practices. While having a future looking outlook on curatorial practices, you also acknowledge the importance of addressing the present moment and pressing questions faced by cultural producers, policy makers, curators, artists and researchers.
Creative and highly motivated, you’ll be able to take up the challenges of enabling diverse student cohorts to explore and develop the skills, knowledge and expertise to become confident in developing research-led, experimental, creative and critical curatorial practices to enable students to engage with and make an impact in professional work or through further study.
