The opportunity

The Mandarin Language Tutor (Associate Lecturer) will teach a single group of students at beginner level on the undergraduate unit ‘Language For Business’, as part of the four year MSc Strategic Fashion Management at the London College of Fashion.

The ‘Language For Business Unit’ runs for 14 teaching weeks (3 hours per week), and is delivered by the UAL Language Centre on behalf of the London College of Fashion.  For the students, this is their only language learning unit in their course, although some may go on to take HSK Level 1 exams.

As well as providing the foundations of the language and basic skills, a general aim of the unit is to prepare students for international work in Fashion Business by developing their confidence in learning the basics of a language rapidly. The unit is an established component of the MSc Strategic Fashion Management, which has been running for ten years.

The unit covers standard content at beginner level (Pronunciation, Introductions, Talking about self and family, Likes and dislikes, Abilities, Buying and selling) and extends to include basic language for fashion business (Clothing including materials, Making appointments, Describing schedules and travel plans, Describing a business or company). Students learn to recognise key characters (80-100 characters) for reading purposes but are not expected to write them for assessment. Assessment consists of a ten minute speaking test (1:1) and a written paper assessing reading skills and language knowledge at beginner level.

The teaching consists of 3 hours per week, on Mondays, for 13 weeks, and in week 14 there are speaking skills assessments for 7 hours on a Friday. The timetable is as follows:

25/09/2023: 15.00-17.30 – 2 hours class contact (student induction and first short class)

02/10/2023 – 13/11/2023: 14.30 – 17.30

20/11/2023: 09.00 – 12.00

27/11/2023: 14.30 – 17.30

The teaching is delivered at the brand new London College of Fashion campus in Stratford, London.
