The opportunity

Critical and Theoretical Studies (CTS) occupy a central position across the Design School and underpin all UG courses with a framework of critical, contextual and theoretical thinking which supports an international and diverse body of students in becoming confident in the research, analysis, critique and presentation of complex theoretical ideas and contexts linked to their emerging design interests.

Delivered across all undergraduate courses in the Design School, the CTS curriculum includes three stand-alone units (one in each year), as well as a collaboratively delivered Introduction to… unit in year one. The content and modes of delivery of each unit seek to respond to the variety of interests and design specialisms within the school, allowing students to develop a critical language around design cultures.

Working as part of a dynamic and research-focused team, you will undertake teaching, curriculum development, administration and assessment of units, as well as on-going scholarship within a programme. Reporting to the CTS Coordinator, the post-holder will work collaboratively within the CTS team and liaise with UG course leaders, deploying specialist expertise to develop pedagogy and the curriculum in innovative and critical directions.

The role offers an exciting opportunity to take an active role in the development of the CTS curriculum as the Design School works on interconnecting theory and practice across different design disciplines.

The curriculum seeks to embed key principles and shared values centred on Climate, Racial and Social Justice, as suggested by the Responsible Design Framework.

About you

You will be someone who can combine teaching and assessment experience at Higher Education level with knowledge and critical understanding of the social, cultural, environmental, political, historical and economic issues that shape contemporary design practices and theoretical discourses.

You will be able to apply innovative digital approaches to teaching and learning and be able draw upon your own research in the development of learning and assessment practice and innovative approaches to course development and delivery. You will have an ability to work independently as well as working collaboratively with teams across different professional groups.

You will have a strong commitment to responsible design practices and applying these in an academic or professional context. You will engage students through a combination of innovative and compassionate pedagogy, have a strong understanding of design cultures and be engaged with relevant research networks and communities of practice.

We particularly welcome applicants with expertise in global or postcolonial approaches to design.

If you have any queries about this role or need any reasonable adjustments for your application, please contact Lesley Wilkins, Senior Resourcing Adviser, lcc.jobs@lcc.arts.ac.uk or telephone: 020 7514 7985
