The opportunity

We are recruiting a Learning Zone Advisor as part of the Library and Learning Zone team, based at Central Saint Martins for weekday and evening support.

This post is based at Central Saint Martins and is available on a temporary basis either as a secondment (current UAL staff only) or a fixed term contract for 1 year from start date. 

The post holder will contribute to the delivery and development of high quality student-focused resources and services at Central St Martins Library and Learning Zone. The role involves participating in front-line services, administrative duties and in supporting senior staff with the supervision of the space.

You will participate in cross-site working groups collaborating on enhancing spaces and services for students. 

You will provide guidance and support to individuals and groups in their use of CSM Library and Learning Zone facilities and equipment. This involves troubleshooting as well as advice on specialist creative software such as Photoshop and specialist equipment.  

You will assist with the regular maintenance of IT software and equipment in the Library and Learning Zone.

You will work with colleagues at CSM to plan and deliver relevant one to one and group teaching to support student learning and attainment, in person and on-line.

You will liaise with managers to effectively supervise colleagues and the day to day operation of the service, including supporting senior staff with timetabling.  You will take regular shifts on the information desk.

The role is 4 days per week and will be a mixture of shifts, including:

early (8.30am-4.30pm) 

day ( 9am-5pm)

mid (10am-6pm)

late (2.15pm-10.15pm) shifts

Occasional remote working might be possible in arrangement with the line manager of the post.

Draft working pattern (hours and days subject to change):

Monday: early (8.30am-4.30pm) OR day ( 9am-5pm) OR mid (10am-6pm)

Tuesday: early (8.30am-4.30pm) OR day ( 9am-5pm) OR mid (10am-6pm)

Wednesday: early (8.30am-4.30pm) OR day ( 9am-5pm) OR mid (10am-6pm)

Thursday: late (2.15pm-10.15pm) *

*Thursday 2.15pm – 10.15pm (during all late night closing weeks – usually 34 weeks of the year) THEN early (8.30am-4.30pm) OR day ( 9am-5pm) OR mid (10am-6pm) for the rest of the academic year.

About you

  • Educated with a degree level qualification in Library and Information Management OR an equivalent subject area OR equivalent library and customer service experience
  • You will have an interest in the subject areas of the University of the Arts London.
  • You will have excellent written and oral communication skills
  • You will be IT literate with knowledge of creative software.
  • You will have relevant experience in an open access IT, library or customer service environment.
  • You must demonstrate the ability to work independently, and you will have the ability to provide routine oral and written information clearly and concisely and competent numerical skills.
  • Working in a small team, you will provide positive and responsive customer service.
  • You will have the ability to supervise the work of others, and to take responsibility for the supervision of the resource in the absence of the manager and senior advisor.
  • You will demonstrate a commitment to your own development through effective use of appraisal schemes and staff development processes.
