The opportunity

The Product, Ceramic and Industrial Design programme at Central Saint Martins invites applications for Associate Lecturers (AL) and Visiting Practitioners (VP) to teach our new course, MA Design for Industry 5.0. This timely course foregrounds people and the planet in exploring the entrepreneurial opportunity presented by the fourth industrial revolution. It will run for the first time in Autumn 2023.

We are looking forward to hearing from a range of applicants who are design practitioners with a demonstrable commitment to Industry 5.0 principles, with knowledge and experience in manufacturing, and a strong interest in design education. We would particularly like to hear from candidates with expertise in the following areas:

– Design & manufacturing-oriented social entrepreneurship

– Social anthropology in relation to design and manufacturing

– Software, hardware and robotics in design and manufacturing

Shortlisted applicants will be interviewed and, if identified as appointable, added to a pool of Associate Lecturers and Visiting Practitioners who can be matched to staffing needs that arise over a 12-month period. This could include tutoring, delivering seminar and workshop activities, or developing course materials.

While most needs that arise in-year are temporary, staff who take on hourly-paid roles often find them to be a productive way to become immersed in our environment, develop their practice as academics, and gain experience that may help them in later applications to more substantive or permanent roles within our programme.

Please note that we expect to receive a high volume of applications from appointable candidates, and while we hope to engage as many of them as possible, being added to the pool of Associate Lecturers and Visiting Practitioners does not guarantee an offer of work.

Successful candidates will be expected to:

· Take a student-centred approach to providing learning and teaching on MA Design for Industry 5.0.

· Work as part of a team to deliver academic units that include staff-led and student-initiated project briefs and may involve delivering projects with industry partners.

· Provide considered feedback on student work and conduct assessment which is rigorous, clear and fair and complies with the policies established by the University and the College.

· Work in-person or digitally as required.

· More broadly, participate in narrowing student achievement gaps and reflect on your practice through the lenses of ethics, anti-racism, climate emergency and social justice.

About you

This role is open to candidates with degree-level qualifications in product and industrial design, design engineering, or an equivalent. We also welcome applications from candidates with relevant disciplinary backgrounds, such as the sciences and humanities, whose practice and/or teaching relates to Industry 5.0 principles and technologies. Some prior experience and awareness of teaching at undergraduate or postgraduate level are desirable. This could include the delivery of workshops or guest lectures and/or experience as a Graduate Teaching Assistant.

The Product, Ceramic and Industrial Design programme is a community of staff and students that operates at the forefront of design education research and knowledge exchange.

MA Design for Industry 5.0 is a new industrial design course that complements four well-established courses within the programme.
