The opportunity

The Design School (LCC) seeks a Senior Lecturer in User Experience design, with a particular focus on supporting and leading students in exploring the non-linear human-centred design process where user needs and behaviours are at the forefront of design decisions throughout the research, ideation, prototype, testing, and implementation phases. The Senior Lecturer will encourage students to pursue design intervention motivated by a deep understanding of users, user experience, and context. This process utilises ethnographic research methods and modes of contextual enquiry to inform the human-centred design process and introduces logic for methods selection, reducing bias in sampling and triangulation practices, and step-by-step methods procedures to prepare students to engage in data collection and analysis. Additionally, the Senior Lecturer should be comfortable in introducing and advising students throughout the holistic development of any digital product regardless of the design intervention scale. Guided by user insights, the creative process focuses on the design, experimentation and iterative prototyping of the user experience in the context of digital products. Students explore the relationship between user experience and digital products through making as enquiry while engaging in analogue and digital fabrication methods. The Senior Lecturer will guide students to document, curate, and communicate their individual design process using a strategic balance of written and visual modes of communication appropriate for the intended audience.

The role also involves contributing to curriculum development in the domain of embodied and situated design practice, while working with the community of practice in questioning assumptions in user experience design. The Senior Lecturer will be experienced in leading and supporting the development of curricula and teaching at BA level on User Experience Design or related courses.

As a Senior Lecturer you are responsible for teaching, administration, assessment, curriculum development, and on-going scholarship within the discipline. You will work collaboratively within a course team, deploying specialist expertise to develop pedagogy and the curriculum in innovative and critical directions. You will make a significant contribution to the quality of learning and the support students receive in order to enable them to complete their studies successfully.

You will also work with the Course Leaders, students and colleagues across the College in promoting and developing the subjects through conferences, public exhibitions and other contributions to research and knowledge exchange. You will develop partnerships and collaborations with industry and academic partners as well as bring your own research and/or practice to bear on the development of the subject and the course.

Further information should be viewed on the course pages before application.

About you

You will have previous experience of teaching in Higher Education or comparable context, and in delivering a high-quality student experience, as well as some curriculum development. You engage students through a combination of innovative and compassionate pedagogy, knowledge exchange and/or research. You will have or should be willing to attain, with UAL’s support, a relevant teaching qualification or recognition.

An MA or equivalent relevant industry experience in fields associated with experience design or related disciplines is essential. You will have a strong commitment to the advancement and expansion of your field, and a strong commitment to responsible design practices and applying these in academic or professional context. You will be motivated to working closely within team and the students and actively support the course leader to achieve the course’s aims and vision.

You should be a specialist practitioner and/or researcher who is keen to use your academic and/or industry-based experience to develop and challenge the discipline and support the development of student work on the course. You should have a strong understanding of the contemporary context of experience design in an academic and/or professional setting, and be engaged in relevant networks and communities of practice within this and/or related fields.
