The opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity for 2 experienced Student Advisers (1 x Permanent and 1 x Fixed Term) to play a key role at University of the Arts London (UAL), providing advice and guidance on a variety of issues to support students.

Working across the various colleges of UAL, you will act as the first point of contact for students seeking support, offering accurate information on complex topics such as student finance, immigration rules, benefits for disabled students, and application processes.

You will manage individual student cases, investigating issues, advocating on their behalf, and negotiate with organisations like the Student Loans Company, the Home Office, local authorities, and benefits offices to help students resolve problems.

You will also refer students to specialist colleagues, other university services, or external agencies when necessary, ensuring they get the most appropriate and timely help.

The posts are based in University buildings where Student Services have a presence, in person for a minimum 3 days per week and up to 2 days working from home in accordance with operational needs.

Your profile

You will have experience of advice work gained within a similar information or advisory role, in a similar environment in education or externally in advice agencies, and will need good working knowledge of the law, rules and regulations of student finance and immigration, and how they are applied to individual students.

As the role involves navigating complex rules around finance, immigration, and benefits, you will be a natural problem-solver with strong attention to detail, as well as be empathetic and approachable in order to support students.

You will also be skilled at advocacy and negotiation as the role involves negotiating with organisations such as the Home Office or Student Loans Company, which requires persistence and confident communication in order to secure fair outcomes for students.

The ability to use a range of resources and types of data to produce full and accurate case-files, reports and/or accounts of situations is equally important.
