The opportunity

The Design School is looking to recruit two lecturers for the MA Design for Social Innovation and Sustainable Futures course on fixed-term contract basis to provide staff absence cover. The course is a collaborative, creative and generative studio for designers interested in working with complex global issues. It explores the future of design practice and its interdependence with eco-social concerns by interrogating the environment, materiality, empathy, ethics and justice within broad and dynamic socio-cultural, economic and political contexts, with an emphasis on innovative practice, collective action, plurality and real-world change.

This is an exciting opportunity for a candidate who is committed to responsible design practices, ethics of care and promoting sustainable change through design. The position invites applicants who are interested in eco-social theory and practice and participatory approaches and opportunities to ethically co-design for complex social and environmental problems.

As a lecturer, you will be responsible to the Course Leader for the delivery of units by bringing in perspectives such as design justice and feminist and decolonial approaches to design research and practice. You will bring research and/or industry and teaching experience at the postgraduate level. You will manage and participate in the delivery of student-centred and inclusive teaching and contribute to course development, assessment, quality management and student recruitment.

Your profile

We are looking for an individual with a qualification at the undergraduate or postgraduate level relevant to transition design, eco-social justice and responsible design. You will bring knowledge of delivering creative projects in a professional environment and experience in a range of eco-socially just visual communication tools and research methodologies. You will also have comprehensive knowledge of learning and teaching to international students.

As an academic, previous teaching experience at the postgraduate level is essential in addition to the experience of research and/or professional practice in visually communicating for sustainable futures, climate justice future trajectory and engagement with culturally diverse contexts. You should also demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of design practice as it intersects with social justice, climate emergency and other global social, cultural, environmental, political and economic forces that are transforming the design discipline.

The successful candidate should possess effective interpersonal skills and be a student-centred teacher focused on promoting diversity and inclusivity while demonstrating strong communication and organisational skills. We are particularly looking for applicants who are keen to work in a diverse team and who can work collaboratively with colleagues to develop the subject area and share expertise.

If you have any queries about this role or need any reasonable adjustments for your application, please contact Lesley Wilkins, Senior Resourcing Adviser, lcc.jobs@lcc.arts.ac.uk
