The opportunity
Purpose of the role
We need an excellent digital content designer who understands the web, technology and people. You need to be user-focussed and have the needs of our users uppermost at all times.
Key duties and responsibilities
- Be one of UAL’s main content designers for research content across UAL’s digital platforms. Design, create and edit textual and visual content for a range of UAL’s digital platforms. This includes our website (arts.ac.uk) and our intranet among others.
- Build relationships with teams across UAL and work with different stakeholders to create accurate, accessible and user-focused content. Manage the expectations of stakeholders across UAL.
- Promote focused, user-led content design across UAL and help others to do so. Advocate for the needs of our users and challenge requests that do not meet users’ needs.
- Champion and promote the UAL style guide and UAL’s tone of voice, image and brand guidelines.
- Understand and apply the principles of digital accessibility to all content.
- Review and approve content created by stakeholders.
- Answer a range of queries from staff with varying digital skills.
- Build online forms and surveys.
- Analyse analytics and UX evidence to best understand what our users need. Use evidence to make content decisions.
- Track the performance of content and make iterative improvements where required.
- Write monthly reports of key platforms and channels
Training, strategy and teamwork
- Assume other reasonable duties as decided by the Senior Digital Content Designer, Digital Content Design Manager and the Assistant Head of Online Services.
- Adopt an agile approach for delivering content iteratively in sprints.
- Administrative tasks including audits, organising training, and responding to emails.

- Digital Content Design Manager, Senior Digital Content Designer and other members of the Content Team
- Research teams
- The wider Digital Public Platforms Team
- Web teams in the UAL Colleges
- Social Purpose directorate including Communications, Brand and Creative Services
- Content owners and content editors
General duties

About you
Experience, knowledge and qualifications
- A relevant qualification such as a degree or equivalent work experience.
- Experience creating and editing content for websites and intranets.
- Excellent IT skills and ability to use, or learn how to use, a range of software including:

- MS Office

- Email newsletter software such as Mail Chimp or similar

- Survey and online forms software (Jisc, MS Forms and similar)

- Photoshop and other Adobe editing software
- Extensive experience of using a content management system (CMS).
- Experience of working in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience of creating, designing and editing content so that is user focused, including text and videos.
- Experience of working in sprints using Agile methodology.
- Designing content based on user testing and redesigning content to make it more user focused.
Communication skills
- Ability to translate complex process and academic content into plain English and user-focused design.
- Excellent writing and editing skills with an eye for detail.
- Takes the initiative, shows creativity and solve problems with solutions that benefit the organisation.
- Identify when to solve problems yourself and when to get support.
Research, teaching and learning or Professional practice.
- Establish the facts by making the right enquiries.
- Identify and use and range of sources and types of data to produce full and accurate reports or accounts of situations. Help others make decisions by providing relevant information and data.

- Plans, prioritises and organises work to meet objectives on time.
- Excellent time management, including meeting deadlines and balancing competing demands.
- Works independently with minimal supervision.
Teamwork
- Works collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team of content designers, developers and UX researchers.
- Works with a diverse group of people across the organisation and with different professional groups.

- Provides a positive and responsive student or customer service.

- Uses initiatives, analytics and creativity to resolve problems which provide the most benefit to the organisation.
